Injured Penguins Skate Prior To Second Day of Camp

Day two of training camp is underway for the Pittsburgh Penguins and for the second day in a row, the injured players were on the ice prior to a full-team skate.

Penguins’ skaters Jake Guetnzel, Will Butcher, Raivis Ansons, and prospects Nolan Collins and Owen Pickering are all dealing with their own injuries and are on separate timelines for return.

According to head coach Mike Sullivan following the first day of camp, Guentzel’s timeline remains unchanged, Pickering is day-to-day, and the rest of the crew remain out indefinitely.

Guentzel underwent an ankle surgery during the offseason that is set to keep him out of the Penguins lineup to start the 2023-24 regular season.

New president and general manager Kyle Dubas stated he is hopeful that Guentzel only misses about five games and Sullivan echoed that by saying they are encouraged by his progress.

Sullivan noted that it won’t be easy to replace Guentzel even for the short amount of time he may be missing for, but they’re exploring all of the possible options.

While Guentzel’s spot in the roster is secured, Butcher had an opportunity to fight for a role in the lineup, but this injury may push him out of contention.

Pickering likely wasn’t set to fight for a roster spot, but his status being listed as day-to-day opens up hope that he could see full practices during camp, or even a preseason game or two.
