The Packers should not consider trading Jordan Love for draft capital

What the Green Bay Packers have in quarterback Jordan Love is something special.

No, he's not going to be Brett Favre or Aaron Rodgers and those expectations have always been unfair. In fact, there's a more than solid chance that Love will never put on a gold Hall of Fame jacket.

With that said, this 2023 season has been all about evaluating Love and whether or not he could be a franchise quarterback for the Packers.

General manager Brian Gutekunst sure hoped that would be the case when he traded up for Love in 2020 and then shipped Aaron Rodgers off to the New York Jets this offseason.

Coming into 2023, though, Love's capabilities as a starter were the only question that needed to be answered in Green Bay.

And no he hasn't been perfect. He's still raw and prone to mistakes like many young quarterbacks are. With that said, he's thrown for 3,368 yards and 25 touchdowns with 11 interceptions this season.

The picks are a problem but keep in mind that Peyton Manning threw 28 in his first NFL season. Those wrinkles can be ironed out via coaching.

What even the best coaches in the world can't coach is raw talent and the ability to make big plays (just ask Bill Belichick), and Love has that in bunches.

That's Patrick Mahomes-esque.

Love may never reach the Mahomes level in this league but he's certainly shown the raw talent and potential to be a top-10 quarterback in the NFL, and that type of player doesn't grow on trees.

That's what makes trade talk for draft capital this offseason so silly. Sure, the Packers could use Love to entice a team like the Washington Commanders to trade the potential No. 4 overall pick, but what would the Packers be getting, really, by taking a quarterback that high in the draft?

Even if Caleb Williams or Drake Maye was available at that position, the Packers would be drafting them for their potential and the hope that they could become a top-10 quarterback in the league — which is exactly what they have in Love.

Love has shown enough in 2023 to justify an offense built around his talents.
