Steelers, Ike Taylor Lock in on S Trey Dean at Florida Pro Day

The Steelers focused closely on Florida safety Trey Dean at Florida pro day on Thursday, signaling the potential idea that he could be on their radar to help replace the loss of Terrell Edmunds.

According to Brandon Olsen of Locked On Gators, the Steelers sent former Steelers cornerback and now scout Ike Taylor down to Gainesville to take a close look at Dean. Meanwhile, director of player scouting Mark Sadowski joined him there to take a look at other prospects.

However, Taylor ran the drills for Dean at the event, Olsen says. It is not the first safety that the Steelers have focused on in recent weeks after losing Terrell Edmunds. From signing Keanu Neal to hosting Daniel Scott for a pre-draft visit, Dean is the latest box-capable player that could be on their radar.

At 6-foot-2, 200 pounds, Dean benched out an impressive 25 reps at the NFL Combine. His vertical landed at 36 1/2 inches but he ran a meager 4.75 40-yard dash. However, he reportedly posted elite agilities at Florida pro day. So, could Trey Dean be the depth player the Steelers are looking for a box safety?

He fits the mold of a young, strong player who is box capable. In his five year career with the Gators, Dean put up four interceptions, 255 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, 18 pass deflections, and 56 games played overall. With plenty of experience, Dean could be an interesting option as an older, more seasoned player for the Steelers at the position in the 2023 NFL Draft.
