New York Giants’ Owner Weighs In On Quarterback Situation
Chris Pedota, NorthJersey.com / USA TODAY NETWORK

One year after committing $92 million in guaranteed money to Daniel Jones, the New York Giants owner, John Mara, appears to be reevaluating his commitment to the quarterback currently at the helm of his team.

As the 2024 NFL Draft approaches, with the Giants holding the No. 6 overall pick, Mara has delegated the decision of whether to move up in the draft to select Jones’ potential successor to general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll.

“If they fall in love with a quarterback and believe that it’s worth pick No. 6 or moving up, I certainly would support that. I let the general manager and the head coach build the roster.”

This decision by Mara reflects the organization’s aspirations to progress further as a franchise. It comes on the heels of a disappointing 2023 season, where the Giants finished with a 6-11 record after losing a divisional playoff game the previous year to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Jones’ 2023 season was cut short in Week 9 due to an ACL tear. Despite the possibility of a top quarterback prospect falling to them at No. 6 or trading up to secure one, Mara suggests that both Jones and the new prospect could coexist on the roster by September.

The upcoming 2024 NFL Draft serves as a pivotal moment for the Giants, showcasing their commitment to Jones.

It’s important to note that neither Schoen nor Daboll were responsible for drafting Jones, and their disappointing performance in 2023 might fuel their desire to select a quarterback of their choice this year.

Mara’s stance indicates that the decision isn’t solely influenced by Jones’ contract, signaling a willingness to explore other options.

While Jones has shown promise, completing 64.3 percent of his career passing attempts for 12,512 yards, with 62 touchdowns and 40 interceptions, his postseason success has been limited, with only one appearance and one victory since being drafted No. 6 overall in 2019.

Depending on the draft board’s developments, the New York Giants could emerge as potential contenders to trade up for Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy, whom reports suggest they have shown strong interest in during the pre-draft evaluation process.

Mara’s comments suggest that he won’t impede Schoen and Daboll from making such a move if they believe McCarthy offers greater potential than Jones for the future.
