Los Angeles Chargers Bring In Double-Digit Sack Artist For NFL Free Agent Visit
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Chargers surprisingly retained edge rushers Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack earlier this offseason. There were widespread rumors that new general manager Joe Hortiz would move off at least one of the high-priced veterans. That did not happen.

After avoiding this position in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Chargers are now out there seeking help in free agency.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Los Angeles just met with former Pittsburgh Steelers first-round pick Bud Dupree.

This could very well be an interesting signing for the Chargers. Dupree, 31, was the No. 22 overall pick of Pittsburgh out of Kentucky back in 2015. He’s been an inconsistent performer throughout his nine-year career, but has put up some solid seasons.

Los Angeles Chargers Seek Depth With Bud Dupree Visit

From 2015-18 with the Steelers, Dupree recorded a combined 33 quarterback hits, 30 tackles for loss and 20 sacks. Decent numbers. But not necessarily stats indicative of being a first-round selection.

Dupree then had consecutive career seasons in 2019-20, recording a combined 32 quarterback hits and 19.5 sacks. This netted him a five-year, $82.5 million contract with the Tennessee Titans in 2021.

He ended up recording just seven sacks with Tennessee over two seasons before latching on with the Atlanta Falcons ahead of the 2023 campaign (6.5 sacks last season in Atlanta).

From a Chargers perspective, adding depth to the EDGE pass-rush position should be a goal moving forward in the offseason.

Outside of Bosa and Mack, there is not a whole heck of a lot to look at here. Tuli Tuipulotu did play well in a part-time role as a rookie last season, recording 4.5 sacks. The idea of bringing in another veteran makes sense. Dupree fits the bill.
